Volunteer Opportunities

Recreation Volunteers

The Recreation, Culture and Community Services Department has a variety of volunteer opportunities for citizens interested in participating in community programs, special events and project specific committees.

Find out how you can donate your time, share your knowledge and skills with others while further developing your leadership skills, meeting new people and even gaining new abilities.

Volunteering is a great way to:

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Be 13 years of age or older
  • Be interested in recreation, parks, or the environment
  • Be able to commit at least 2 hours a month
  • Be discreet with confidential information
  • Be reliable and responsible
  • Must consent to a criminal record check

How do I Volunteer?

  • Fill out a volunteer application form and criminal record check form
  • Provide two character references
  • Attend a volunteer orientation session
  • Meet with a city staff to coordinate placement

SHARKS Aquatic Leadership Program

Provides the opportunity to gain leadership, knowledge, skills and experience in the aquatic environment. Interested candidates should complete an application form (available at Douglas Recreation Centre or Al Anderson Memorial Pool). Successful applicants receive a Sharks t-shirt, athletic leadership manual and a six-hour orientation session. They then assist teaching swimming lesson and running special events and practice lifesaving skills and shadow guarding. At the end of the summer, Sharks receive an evaluation of their job performance, including a record of the hours they spent assisting instructing.

Prerequisites: 14 years or older and completion of Swim Kids 10.
Cost: $20 for a new applicant and $10 for a returning Shark
